We have been campaigning to increase support for a new Motion in the Scottish Parliament as well as working with the UK Parliament in Westminster.
Motion S3M-800, tabled by Keith Brown MSP, calls for the Minister for Public Health to investigate the association between high voltage power lines and childhood leukaemia, and take action to safeguard Scotland’s citizens from this risk. Click here to read the Motion in full (PDF format).
We campaigned to raise awareness and help muster enough support amongst the 129 Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) to make the Motion stand.
A Motion in the Scottish Parliament must receive 30 signatures gained from at least three of the parties within six weeks of tabling, or it falls. Only a small number of Motions ever stand, but we were determined to make sure this one did.
Success
We are delighted that the Motion gained more than 30 signatures before the deadline and support continues to grow. This means it will stay on the list of Motions for the whole session, helping to raise awareness of the association between childhood leukaemia and power lines.
Thank you to all the MSPs who have supported us by signing the Motion.
Overhead power lines are a very important issue in Scotland at the moment during the Public Inquiry on a new high voltage power line between Beauly and Denny.
The planned 400kV line will travel close to schools, homes and a university hall of residence in the Stirling area. Over 14,000 people have objected to the proposal on health grounds alone.
What you can do…
If you live in Scotland, you can ask your MSP to sign the Motion. Click here to find your MSP.
