Causes and Prevention of Childhood Leukaemia

ConferenceChildhood Leukaemia Causes and Prevention, London, April, 2008

Our second international conference focused on environmental risk factors in the development of leukaemia and the interplay of these with genetic factors.

Held over two days at the UCL Institute of Child Health, it included talks across a range of scientific disciplines and explored the latest thinking on possible causes of leukaemia.

The conference succeeded in its aim to stimulate further debate and discussion across the traditional boundaries of these disciplines. Future research priorities were identified as a result of participant discussion.

Incidence, causal mechanisms and prevention

conference '04
Incidence, causal mechanisms and prevention, London, September 2004

In 2004 we hosted the first ever international conference focusing on the causes of childhood leukaemia.

The conference attracted delegates and speakers from leading research centres around the world. Over five days these scientists shared their findings and exchanged their expert views, all with one purpose in mind – the prevention of childhood leukaemia.

Topics ranged from the role of viruses and infections in childhood leukaemia to the effects of ionising and non-ionising radiation, ‘light at night’ and melatonin suppression, air pollution and diet.

By bringing together scientists from a range of disciplines and from all over the world, the conference stimulated a great deal of discussion and debate, generating new ideas which we hope will flow through into the research setting.

To increase the pace of research, during the conference we announced our first funding call for projects investigating the causes of childhood leukaemia.
