International Scientific Conference 2004

CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA organised and hosted the first ever international conference focusing on the causes of childhood leukaemia in September 2004: Childhood leukaemia: incidence, causal mechanisms and prevention.

The conference attracted delegates and speakers from leading research centres around the world. Over five days these scientists shared their findings and exchanged their expert views, all with one purpose in mind – the prevention of childhood leukaemia.

The presentations included some ground-breaking research. Topics ranged from the role of viruses and infections in childhood leukaemia to the effects of ionising and non-ionising radiation, ‘light at night’ and melatonin suppression, air pollution and diet.

By bringing together scientists from a range of disciplines and from all over the world, the conference stimulated a great deal of discussion and debate, generating new ideas which we hope will flow through into the research setting.

The conference resulted in extensive broadsheet coverage. It also attracted national television and radio exposure, with diverse stories covering the range of topics presented during the conference.

This helped to raise awareness of the need for further research into the causes of childhood leukaemia. It also boosted awareness of the charity’s vital work to a new high where one in seven adults in Great Britain had heard of our work.

To increase the pace of research, we announced new funding of £1 million for projects investigating the causes of childhood leukaemia.

Our second conference on Childhood Leukaemia: Causes and Prevention was held 29th-30th April, 2008. It focussed on environmental risk factors in the development of leukaemia and the interplay of these with genetic factors.

It included talks across a range of scientific disciplines, exploring the latest thinking on possible causes of leukaemia.

The conference succeeded in its aim to stimulate further debate and discussion across the traditional boundaries of these disciplines. Future research priorities were identified as a result of participant discussion.
