Clinical trial infrastructure support
Award amount: £600,000
Date of award: July 2007
Until 2006, clinical trials for childhood leukaemias were managed separately from those for other childhood cancers.
In 2006 the UK Childhood Cancer Study Group merged with the UK Childhood Leukaemia Working Party as a first step towards a more coordinated and cost-effective approach to the management of all paediatric oncology trials and allied translational research in the UK.
The newly formed Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group (CCLG) is a national professional body responsible for the organisation of the treatment and management of children with cancer in the UK.
The Group’s main remit is the coordination of national and international clinical trials. Other areas of activity include national cancer registration and the provision of information for patients and families.
As more children are cured of cancer, longer term adverse effects of treatment are becoming more apparent. The CCLG is seeking not only to improve survival rates, but also to ensure a normal future – both physically and emotionally – for these children.
We are joining forces with Cancer Research UK, Leukaemia Research and the Medical Research Council to support data collection and trial management throughout the network of 21 centres which participate in the clinical trials.
Through this we hope to provide an environment for the development of new anti-cancer therapies, achieving better cure rates for those children with inferior survival rates, and reducing the long term toxicity for those children with good outcomes.
