Research grants

We provide funding for scientists and clinicians in the UK and abroad to carry out research into all aspects of childhood leukaemia.

This includes research into the causes and prevention of the disease and the development of improved treatments for childhood leukaemia.

Call for applications

We are currently calling for applications for projects which will advance our understanding of the causes of childhood leukaemia.

If you wish to apply for funding, please submit your application by following the instructions given in the guidelines document:

Project grants

We offer funding for research projects lasting up to three years. We currently have 20 active project grants.

Programme grants

Our programme grants provide up to five years of funding for teams of researchers working on themes related to childhood leukaemia.

We currently have four programmes in place – at the University of Bristol, the University of Oxford, the Institute of Child Health and the UCL Cancer Institute - and have no plans to invest in any further programme grants in the near future.

Capital grants

In recent years our focus has shifted away from the development of research facilities so that we have more funding available to support actual research.

Who may apply for a grant

Anyone proposing to carry out work aimed at advancing our understanding of childhood leukaemia is eligible to apply for funding. Researchers should usually be attached to a research institution and should have the institution’s approval for the proposed work.

Researchers from institutions overseas are eligible to apply for project grants. Programme grants are only available to UK institutions.

Peer review

We became members of the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) in 2004 and of the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) in January 2008.

We operate a transparent, scientific grant-making process and since 2004 all research grant applications are subject to rigorous peer review, in accordance with standards laid down by the AMRC.

Applications for funding are initially reviewed by a panel made up of at least two members of our Scientific Advisory Committee and relevant external reviewers from within the appropriate scientific field.

If the work is recommended and funding granted, the progress of the work is then assessed on an annual basis in an ongoing commitment to quality and relevance.
