Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, Paul O’Gorman Building

The team at the hospital is pioneering the use of unmatched stem cell transplants, providing further hope to children for whom no matched donor is available.

This new children’s hospital, the only dedicated paediatric hospital in South West England, opened in 2001.

Bristol Royal Hospital for Children is a national and international referral centre for children requiring stem cell transplantation.

In addition to providing the most up-to-date facilities possible, one of the main aims was to overcome many of the difficulties that face patients, families and staff, such as the provision of more single cubicles and single rooms and better facilities for parents to stay overnight with their child.

Our funding has helped to provide state-of-the-art MRI scanning facilities. An MRI scan enables doctors to monitor even subtle effects of a child’s treatment and make adjustments where necessary.

The team at the hospital is pioneering the use of unmatched stem cell transplants, providing further hope to children for whom no matched donor is available.

The scanning facilities will assist in the development and monitoring of this new technique.

The child-friendly MRI suite takes children on a journey into an ‘undersea world’ through the use of specially commissioned artwork, music, lighting, sculpture and digital imagery, helping to minimise the stress of what can otherwise be a very distressing experience.
