Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, Paul O’Gorman Building

This new children’s hospital, the only dedicated paediatric hospital in South West England, opened in 2001. It is a national and international referral centre for children requiring bone marrow transplantation.

In addition to providing the most up-to-date treatment facilities, one of the main aims in the design of the new hospital was to overcome many of the practical difficulties that face patients, families and staff.

The provision of more single cubicles and single rooms and better facilities for parents to stay overnight with their child was an important consideration.

We provided funding of £500,000 towards the installation of state-of-the-art, child-friendly MRI scanning facilities at the new hospital. An MRI scan enables doctors to monitor even subtle effects of a child’s treatment and make adjustments where necessary.

The team at the hospital is pioneering the use of unmatched bone marrow transplants, improving the outlook for children for whom no matched donor is available. The scanning facilities are an important tool in the development and monitoring of this new technique.
